What RR1 Patent Expiration Means for Farmers

The patent for the original Roundup Ready (RR1) soybean trait is set to expire in 2014. That fact has raised all kinds of interest and questions, starting first with what it means for farmers.

Late last year, Monsanto worked to explain our intentions. Lately, several groups, including the American Farm Bureau Federation, have asked about the regulatory issues involved, because the scientific and export regulatory “estate” for a genetically modified trait like this one has to be maintained. One of the many perks of my job is being able to talk to U.S. farmers on a regular basis.

It’s exciting to talk to farmers about future technology coming down the pipeline to help them reach even higher yields, what farming practicing they have in place to make them as productive as possible, what it’s like farming with their family, etc. And some topics aren’t as exciting to discuss with farmers, but yet satisfying to hear their responses.… Full Article »

Seed Patent History

That statement, by one of the most influential presidents of the United States, succinctly states the purpose of the U.S. patent law. There needs to be incentive to inspire invention, without it there would be no progress. This is true with Monsanto, as with any company. Without the ability to patent and profit from our efforts there would be little incentive to develop the technology that thousands of farmers use today.
