At Monsanto, I work with many teams that research and develop products to help farmers, and ultimately, consumers, every day. These teams rely on the science to guide their decision-making, and they adhere to the rigorous regulatory processes established by governments around the world to bring our products to market. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) convened a meeting March 3-10, 2015 to evaluate the potential carcinogenic risks to humans from several pesticides, including glyphosate. Glyphosate is an active ingredient in many popular herbicides, including some produced by Monsanto.

You may or may not have seen this article from the Healthy Home Economist touting wheat is toxic due to being sprayed with Round up (glyphosate) as a pre-harvest. This article brings up some pretty fear inducing statistics for both farmers and non-farmers. A few reports keep circulating that blame the use of Roundup® branded herbicides, or glyphosate-based pesticides in general, for various chronic diseases. We’d like to set the record straight. We want you to know that consumer and farmer safety is critically important to us; and we’re confident that all of our registered herbicides pose no unreasonable risks when used according to label directions.

Over the weekend, the Associated Press published stories alleging growing health problems in Argentina due to misapplied and illegal application of pesticides. The stories report that AP documented dozens of such cases, but provide very few specifics. Activist doctors and academics are quoted as asserting that cancer rates and birth defects are increasing and associated with the use of pesticides. Argentina’s government is criticized for not taking action to address activities that threaten public health.

A paper published this month in the physics journal Entropy attempts to claim that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicide, is connected as a cause, or a link in a chain to a cause, for numerous diseases, including autism, Alzheimer’s, obesity, anorexia nervosa, liver disease, reproductive and developmental disorders, and cancer. With no new data, a piecemeal approach, and low scientific quality, the paper is less a scientific paper and more sheer hypothetical speculation.
