An open letter to parents from parents at Monsanto:
We all want what’s best for our kids. As parents ourselves, we care about the food we feed our families just like you do. Not only are we consumers, we’re also intimately involved in developing products that contribute to safe and nutritious food choices for everyone, including our own families and friends.
Our agriculture business includes more than 4,000 researchers who are working each and every day to make sure our discoveries become safe and effective products. Our team includes physicians, nutritionists, dietitians, toxicologists, plant scientists and many others who have dedicated their careers to studying the safety of our products.
At our annual shareholders’ meeting at the end of January, the safety record of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup® branded products, was questioned by one shareholder’s guest. The wide-ranging list of allegations and papers cited can sound scary. But you should know these claims simply are not true, based on reviews not only by Monsanto but also by independent third-party experts and regulators worldwide.
Monsanto scientists seek out articles and research about each of our products. We were aware of and had already assessed every one of these papers. If there was a credible new finding that suggested potential adverse effects, we are required by law to report it to the appropriate regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as soon as possible. Subsequently, the EPA would act immediately if they had concerns about glyphosate impacting human health, particularly any potential harm to infants and children. Yet after consideration of all of the data, regulators continue approving the use of glyphosate because of its 40-year record of proven safe use.
Most recently, the European Commission’s Health and Consumer Protection Directorate-General just completed a comprehensive risk assessment of glyphosate. After reviewing all of the available scientific data, including new reports and studies, they affirmed that, when used according to the label, glyphosate does not pose a risk to humans, wildlife or the environment.
We know it’s important to feel confident that your family’s food is safe and nutritious. We share that desire, and we bring that passion for safe and nutritious food to Monsanto every day. The people at Monsanto take safety seriously. It is fundamental: the safety of our products will always be our top priority.
