Children of Monsanto Indonesia Employees Create a Road Safety Calendar

Indonesia traffic safety

Traveling is a need for everyone; unfortunately the number of road accidents can be high. Road accidents are the third leading cause of death after coronary heart disease and tuberculosis in Indonesia (World Health Organization, 2012).

Children and young people are at significant risk. Road safety education plays an important role in shaping the attitudes and behaviors of children, young people and adults – ensuring they become responsible drivers, passengers, pedestrians or cyclists.

The Monsanto Indonesia marketing team wanted to teach safety awareness to employees, their families and stakeholders. The team emphasized the need for safety by compiling a 2014 calendar titled “Safety begins from Home.” With this thematic calendar, all Monsanto stakeholders are reminded about Road Safety through adorable pictures, created by our future generations – the kids of Monsanto’s employees.

Why kids painting? Because advocating safety at home will not only encourage employees to talk about safety, but also help our younger generations to understand and apply it in their lives. There is evidence that children start learning about the road system from a very early age and that this can lead to safer behaviors in later life.

The calendar contains 12 pictures from Monsanto Indonesia employees’ kids. The best pictures were selected from 3 different categories; ages 4-6 with the theme of Road Signs, ages 7-9 with the theme of Pedestrian Safety and ages 10-12 with the theme of Safety Driving/Riding. An overwhelming number of paintings and drawings was received from participants all across Indonesia and from all functions. The judges had a difficult time selecting the 12 best pictures.
